Mineral Specimens from Spain - Classic Specimen Localities
Spain’s mineral localities reflect a diverse geology: the Variscan Iberian Massif across the west, the Pyrenees and Betic ranges, and broad sedimentary basins shaped by later mountain building. The Iberian Pyrite Belt in Andalucía is one of the world’s great massive-sulfide provinces, famed for superb pyrite cubes (Navajún and other localities), plus chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and striking gossan and secondary copper minerals. In the Cantabrian Mountains and Pyrenees, veins and skarns can yield fluorite, calcite, barite, sphalerite, and galena, while classic districts in Catalonia and Aragón produce fine quartz and sulfides. In the southeast, Murcia and Almería are celebrated for oxidation-zone species and lead minerals - bright anglesite and cerussite, and locally superb barite and gypsum.
Collecting Spanish minerals is rewarding because many localities are true “world classics” (especially pyrite and fluorite), specimens are often sharply crystallised and highly aesthetic, and the country offers everything from massive-sulphide ore minerals to colourful oxidation suites in a well-documented European setting.
