Zeolites are a large group of tectosilicate minerals that contain aluminium in the crystalline lattice in addition to silicon. The presence of the aluminium opens up the structure into cage-like frameworks that trap water and exchangeable ions. They typically form as secondary minerals in basaltic lavas and volcanic tuffs, lining cavities with delicate crystals. Common species include stilbite, heulandite and chabazite. Valued industrially, zeolites act as molecular sieves, catalysts and water purifiers. For more information about zeolites, click HERE.
