Mineral Specimens from Russia - Classic Specimen Localities
Russia’s mineral localities reflect an immense geological canvas: the ancient Baltic Shield in the northwest, the long Ural orogen dividing Europe and Asia, vast Siberian cratonic terrains, and younger volcanic arcs and mountain belts in the Far East. The Kola Peninsula is world-famous for alkaline intrusions (Khibiny and Lovozero) yielding exceptional suites of rare minerals and striking nepheline-syenite species. The Urals are classic for gem and ore localities – emerald and alexandrite, demantoid garnet, topaz, beryl, tourmaline, and historic platinum and chromite districts - while Siberia adds major diamond fields in Yakutia and renowned Ni–Cu–PGE mineralisation at Norilsk. In the Far East, districts such as Dalnegorsk are celebrated for spectacular calcite and associated species.
Collecting Russian minerals is rewarding because the country combines legendary “type” localities and rare-species assemblages with world-class gems and dramatic cabinet specimens, all tied to a deep mining and mineralogical tradition across hugely varied terrains.
