Madagascar has recently become one of the world’s most important sources of mineral specimens, especially gemstones, prized by collectors and jewellers alike for their diversity and quality. Geologically, the island is built mainly from ancient Precambrian crust (over 3 billion to 500 million years old) that formed as part of the supercontinent Gondwana. These rocks were intensely metamorphosed and deformed during major mountain-building events such as the Pan-African orogeny, 500–600 million years ago, creating the complex gneisses, schists and marbles seen today. Later, around 165 and 90 million years ago, Madagascar broke away first from Africa and then from India as Gondwana fragmented, leaving it as an isolated island in the Indian Ocean.

Both sets of events, the Precambrian and the more recent rifting, were accompanied by extensive magmatism and igneous activity which led to the formation of the island’s abundant, mineral-rich pegmatites and gem deposits. It is these pegmatites, particularly lithium-cesium-tantalum (LCT) types, that have made Madagascar so famous. Their slow crystallisation and volatile-rich chemistry allowed large, well-formed crystals to grow, often within open cavities that yield exceptional specimen material.

The central highlands host many of the best-known pegmatite fields, including areas around Antsirabe, Betafo and Sahatany, where classic minerals such as tourmaline, beryl and quartz occur in abundance. In contrast, northern and southern regions are better known for gem deposits, including the sapphire fields of Ilakaka and the ruby-producing areas near Andilamena. These deposits, often formed through weathering and concentration in secondary sediments, have produced both gem-quality material and striking crystal specimens.

Mining in Madagascar has typically been small-scale and artisanal, punctuated by periodic “rushes” such as the late-1990s sapphire boom at Ilakaka. Despite this, the country has consistently yielded world-class specimens, including vividly coloured liddicoatite tourmalines, fine aquamarine crystals, and large, well-formed sapphires and rubies. For collectors, Madagascar offers a unique combination of geological richness, ongoing discovery, and the continuing potential for exceptional new finds.

Sahatany Valley pegmatite field, Ibity, Antsirabe II District, Vakinankaratra

The Sahatany field, located about 25 kilometres south of Antsirabe, is one of Madagascar’s great pegmatite districts. It contains more than 100 lithium-caesium-tantalum (LCT) pegmatites emplaced along a long river valley and its tributaries, with most of the pegmatite bodies hosted in marble, schist, quartzite and calc-silicate rocks. The field is famous for its miarolitic cavities and pockets that produce exceptionally fine specimen crystals, among them multicoloured tourmalines, rose beryl, spodumene and rose quartz. Mining has a long and extensive history, with gem tourmaline being worked there since the early 20th century. Important named works include the following:

Manjaka (Sahananana) – situated in a ravine about 2 km west of the village of Ihasy, Manjaka is one of the most famous pegmatites in the district. It is an elbaite-subtype LCT-type pegmatite hosted in dolomitic marble and Mg-rich calc-silicate rocks near the Ibity Massif. Worked for gem tourmaline since the early 20th century, it is renowned for its abundant miarolitic cavities, which have produced a wide range of well-formed, high-quality specimen crystals. Apart from these, the location is mineralogically complex and highly significant for its enrichment in boron, which has led to at least 15 boron-bearing minerals, among which are the type locality species béhierite and vránaite. It is also likely to be the type location for the boron-bearing tourmaline, ertlite, although there is some uncertainty about the precise pegmatite of its origin in the wider Sahatany region. However, the presence of boron makes Manjaka the most likely.

Estatoby (Antanetinilapa) – located in the northeastern Sahatany Valley on a small hill behind the village of Antanetinilapa, Estatoby is a complex LCT, elbaite-subtype pegmatite. It has produced mineralogically important specimens, including bityite (first discovered at nearby Maharitra) in the late 1980s. Specimens from here are often mislabelled as 'Ilapa', which is another locality and totally different from Estatoby. So far, bityite has not been reported from Ilapa. In 2012, a large pocket yielded around 70 kg of multicoloured tourmaline crystals, including some very large specimens up to 26 cm in length and weighing over 5 kg. Analysis confirmed many specimens as fluor-liddicoatite, making this a significant source of collector-quality tourmaline.

Ilapa – the locality consists of several workings around Mount Ilapa in the NE part of the Sahatany Valley. The pegmatites have been worked for gem multicoloured tourmalines and are hosted in dolomitic marble. Some minerals, especially bityite found in the late 1980s originating from Estatoby in the same area, are sometimes wrongly labelled as coming from Ilapa.

Tsarafara Sud (Ankadilava) and Tsarafara Nord (Ambalaroy) – both are complex LCT elbaite-subtype pegmatites near the confluence of the Ampahitra and Sahatany Rivers. The sites gained prominence in the 1980s and 1990s for producing excellent multicoloured tourmaline and pale brown cookeite specimens. A flood in the 1980s destroyed most of the Tsarafara Nord workings, and mining since has moved to Tsafara Sud, involving deep, often hazardous tunnels exceeding 20 metres in length.

Maharitra (Manitra or Manitra) – located along the Andohariana creek, a tributary to the Sahatany River, is an LCT granite pegmatite consisting of several dykes. It was mostly worked in the early 20th century but is now abandoned and heavily overgrown. However, it is mineralogically significant as the type location for bityite.

Ampatsikahitra – situated northeast of the village Samizaza in the western part of the Sahatany Pegmatite Field, Ampatsikahitra consists of three pegmatites of complex type LCT that have been worked for gem tourmalines and spodumene. The location is also known for kunzite var. spodumene, beryl and microcline var. amazonite.

Antsofimbato – located near the village of Ambatonapetraka, Antsofimbato consists of a series of kaolinised granite pegmatites hosted in mica schist and worked for gemstones, mainly tourmalines and beryl. The locality is worked as 4 different pegmatite quarries named Antsofimbato I, II, III and IV respectively. These have also yielded bityite, chrysoberyl, and the rare magnesium-aluminium-beryllium oxide, magnesiotaaffeite.

Antaboaka North and Antaboaka South – situated near the village of Reninoro in the northern part of the Sahatany Pegmatite Field, these localities consist of pegmatites hosted in altered migmatite and altered mica schist. They are locally unusual by mostly lacking tourmaline, but are rich in beryl, spessartine, lepidolite and rose quartz. Close to the north pegmatite are diopside-bearing marbles.

Apart from the multicoloured elabaite-liddicoatite tourmaline, spodumene, beryl, quartz and type locality species, the Sahatany pegmatites are also notable for hambergite, danburite, fluorapatite and rhodizite-londonite. For mineral collectors, Sahatany stands out because it can yield both classic pegmatite species and unusual borate-rich assemblages in aesthetic pocket specimens.

Anjanabonoina pegmatites, Betafo District, Vakinankaratra

Anjanabonoina, located about 42 km west-southwest of Betafo in Madagascar’s central highlands, is another of the island’s most celebrated pegmatite localities and a source of particularly fine specimens for mineral collectors. The pegmatites outcrop as dykes on a hill at 1,400 metres elevation, about 2.5 km east of Mount Ikaka. Here, medium-grade metamorphic rocks, including paragneiss, marble and orthogneiss, host a series of strongly zoned pegmatite bodies. Geologically, Anjanabonoina is notable for its complex environment and intense metasomatic activity, a term used to describe geological processes where rock composition changes through chemical reactions driven by infiltrating fluids. As a result, these rocks show extensive tourmalinisation, with schorl–dravite replacing significant portions of schist and quartzite, while nearby marbles are locally transformed into skarn. The pegmatites themselves are hybrid rare-element types, displaying characteristics of both lithium–caesium–tantalum (LCT) and niobium–yttrium–fluorine (NYF) families. This unusual combination contributes to their exceptional mineral diversity and the development of highly enriched, volatile-rich melts. As these melts crystallised, they formed miarolitic cavities, or 'pockets', where large, well-formed crystals could grow. Mining at Anjanabonoina has long focused on these pockets, which yield some of Madagascar’s finest specimens. The locality is especially famous for large, vividly zoned elbaite and liddicoatite tourmalines, often displaying striking colour variations. Other key minerals include topaz, beryl, hambergite, danburite, lepidolite, phenakite, spessartine, spodumene, zircon and a range of rare-element species like fersmite and xenotime-(Y). For collectors, Anjanabonoina remains one of Madagascar’s signature specimen-producing localities, renowned for both quality and variety.

Tsaramanga pegmatite, Mahaiza, Betafo District, Vakinankaratra

The Tsaramanga pegmatite, near the old village of Tsaramanga in the Mahaiza area, is a classic specimen locality in central Madagascar. Geologically, it is an LCT beryl-columbite subtype pegmatite hosted in coarse gabbro of the Ambatofinandrahana intrusive complex. It is best known for unusually rich pocket material, especially fine rose quartz, smoky quartz, blue beryl and good columbite crystals. A recent discovery produced about 300 kg of dark blue aquamarine, including highly transparent gemmy crystals. Mining here has been small-scale and specimen-driven rather than large-scale industrial extraction. The main working is the Tsaramanga, or 'Tongafeno' pegmatite itself, with nearby Mahaiza pegmatites adding to the district’s reputation. Key minerals include rose quartz, aquamarine/blue beryl, tourmaline, rutile, samarskite-group minerals and columbite. Tsaramanga is especially attractive to collectors because it combines aesthetic quartz and beryl with classic rare-element pegmatite accessories, including aeschynite-(Y), euxenite-(Y), monazite-(Ce) and samarskite-(Y). The location has also been reported for native bismuth and several varieties of rutile and zircon.

Mahabé-South pegmatite, Ambakireny, Tsaratanàna District, Betsiboka

Mahabé-South, near Ambakireny in the Tsaratanàna District, is a lesser-known but very important specimen pegmatite in northern-central Madagascar. It is classified as a niobium-yttrium-fluorine (NYF) pegmatite and lies about 27 km east of Andriamena. Unlike the more famous tourmaline-rich LCT pegmatites further south, Mahabé-South is known above all for blue topaz, along with beryl, amazonite and smoky quartz. Mining history appears to have been based on small-scale extraction for specimens and gems rather than sustained industrial mining. The significant working is the pegmatite body itself. For collectors, Mahabé-South is notable because Madagascar is not usually associated with classic topaz specimens, yet this locality has produced exactly that. A specimen weighing 2.3 kg from this pegmatite is part of the collection of the British Museum.

Andilamena ruby deposit, Saranambana, Fenoarivo Atsinanana, Analanjirofo

The Andilamena ruby deposit covers a broad area roughly 45 to 70 km east of the town of Andilamena, although it is administratively located within the Fenoarivo region rather than the Andilamena district itself. The name 'Andilamena' is used because most of the rubies are traded through that town, as the shorter route to the coastal town of Fenoarivo is hindered by difficult jungle and mountainous terrain. The area experienced one of Madagascar’s major corundum rushes in the early 2000s, with an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 miners active by 2001 and peak activity between 2000 and 2004. Ruby mining has since expanded into nearby areas such as Zahamena, which saw renewed activity in 2015. Rather than a single mine, the deposit consists of numerous pegmatite and alluvial workings, including those around the mining towns of Moramanga and Antananarivokely. The principal minerals are ruby and sapphire varieties of corundum. For collectors, Andilamena is significant not only for its gem production but also for yielding well-formed and often highly attractive corundum crystals from one of the world’s major modern ruby regions.

Ilakaka sapphire deposit, Ilakaka, Ihosy District, Ihorombe

Ilakaka-Sakaraha in southern Madagascar is one of the world’s premier sapphire fields and was reported to be the largest global producer of stones for over a decade leading up to 2013. The first discovery near Ilakaka came in 1998, and the area rapidly turned into a boomtown due to its location along Route Nationale 7, which made trade and transport unusually easy. Geologically, the sapphires are associated with sandstone terrains, where they occur in alluvial deposits concentrated in gravel beds and sediments along the Ilakaka, Benahy, Imaloto, Taheza, Fiherenana and Onilahy rivers. Significant named workings include the famous Banque Suisse pit, Ambarazy, the Benahy and Taheza sectors, and sites around Sakaraha and Manombo. Mining has ranged from hand-dug pits to mechanised washing operations. Key minerals are blue and pink sapphire, with chrysoberyl, garnets, spinel and topaz also noted. For collectors and jewellers, Ilakaka is the locality that has propelled Madagascar into the forefront of the modern sapphire trade.

Antsongombato, Antsentsindrano, Betafo District, Vakinankaratra

Antsongombato, in the Betafo District of Madagascar’s central highlands, is another significant pegmatite locality within the broader Sahatany pegmatite province. The name refers to a small area where several lithium-caesium-tantalum (LCT) pegmatite dykes, typically of danburite subtype, have been worked for gem and specimen material. These pegmatites are hosted in metamorphic rocks of the Itremo Group and are notable for their highly evolved chemistry, the presence of boron and rare-element enrichment. Antsongombato is especially famous for its large (up to 7 cm) yellow londonite-rhodizite crystals and as the type locality for the niobium borate, schiavinatoite. It has also produced fine mostly red tourmaline. Mining began in the early 20th century under French colonial activity, focusing on tourmaline, but was abandoned in the 1930s. Work resumed briefly in the 1960s for rhodizite, and more intensive specimen mining took place between 1998 and 2001, which recovered many high-quality specimens from a major dyke up to 400 metres long. Today, small-scale artisanal mining continues, focused on extracting gem and specimen material from pockets within the pegmatites. For collectors, Antsongombato is especially prized for its bright, colourful crystals, complex borate mineralogy, and well-formed pegmatite species. It stands out as one of Madagascar’s key localities for rare minerals beyond the more common tourmaline-bearing deposits.

Marosely, in southeastern Madagascar, is a lesser-known but noteworthy corundum locality on the Mananara River producing both ruby and sapphire. Like the more famous deposits at Ilakaka or Andilamena, Marosely is primarily an eluvial to alluvial deposit, where corundum has been concentrated through weathering and erosion processes of near-surface pegmatite exposures. The geology reflects the breakdown of primary metamorphic sources, with corundum accumulating in soils, gravels and sediments. Mining has typically been small-scale and intermittent, carried out by local miners using simple techniques. Although not a major commercial producer, Marosely has yielded attractive crystals and gem material, sometimes with good colour and form. For collectors, it offers an additional locality that highlights the diversity of Madagascar’s corundum deposits. Its relative obscurity compared to larger fields makes it of particular interest to those seeking less common or under-represented sources within the island’s rich mineral landscape.

Ikalamavony Pegmatite Field, Haute Matsiatra

The Ikalamavony pegmatite field, located in southern Madagascar’s central highlands, is an important but less widely known pegmatite district. Typically, the pegmatites here belong to the LCT family, encompassing beryl-columbite and lepidolite subtypes, and they reside within metamorphic basement rocks. The district saw significant mining activity during the mid-20th century, particularly in the 1950s, when local pegmatites like the Bevoandrano body were mined commercially for beryl. This particular pegmatite, embedded in a pyroxene-gneiss and measuring 200 m long and 15 m wide, is unusual since it is one of the few amblygonite-bearing pegmatites in Madagascar. Another location, the Malakialina body, also mined for beryl, is renowned for the largest crystal ever found. It measured 18 meters long, 3.5 meters in diameter and was estimated to weigh 380 tonnes. Mining here ended in 1963, having produced about 2000 tonnes of beryl and 32 tonnes of columbite-tantalite. Apart from these pegmatites, the Ikalamavony area is also notable for the Lecomte Mine, discovered and mined for gold in the very early years of the 20th century. All three, as well as the other operations in the Ikalamavony region, were small-scale but nevertheless contributed to Madagascar’s early reputation as a source of rare-element pegmatite minerals. Mineralogically, the Ikalamavony field produces beryl, tourmaline, columbite-group minerals, and lithium-bearing species, often from pocket zones within the pegmatites. The additional presence of phosphorus has also led to an unusually diverse mineral suite of nearly 80 species, including striking yellow fluorapatite crystals. Overall, while not as prolific as Sahatany or Anjanabonoina in terms of the volume of gemstones like tourmaline, the locality remains of interest to collectors for its classic pegmatite assemblages and historical significance. It represents a quieter but important part of Madagascar’s broader pegmatite story.

Andranondambo sapphire deposits, Maromby, Amboasary Sud District, Anosy

Andranondambo, in the Anosy region of southeastern Madagascar, is one of the country’s most important recent sapphire localities. Mining here initially began for phlogopite and thorianite in the early 20th century, and sapphires were only discovered near the village in 1991, triggering a major rush that transformed the area into a vast mining settlement, with the population swelling to nearly 100,000 people between 1993 and 1997. Stones from here proved of exceptional quality, quickly gaining a reputation equalling that of Kashmir and its famous ‘Corn Flower Blue’ jewels. The discovery also fuelled the hunt for sapphires in other parts of Madagascar, including those at the Ilakaka deposit and others on the east coast. Andranondambo’s sapphire-bearing zone extends roughly 3 km in length and up to 1 km in width and is marked by countless small pits and narrow sinkholes leading to underground shafts, some reaching depths of 20–30 metres. Geologically, the sapphires originate from high-grade granulite-facies metamorphic rocks of the Proterozoic Tranomaro Group, formed within Th-U-rich skarns during Pan-African metamorphism. Weathering of these primary sources has also produced secondary concentrations in alluvial sediments. The locality is further notable for hibonite, a rare mineral first described from this area and often associated with corundum. Mining has been largely artisanal, and although some exhausted workings were abandoned by the late 2000s, Andranondambo continues as an important producer of sapphires and as a key part of Madagascar’s corundum history. For collectors, it offers not only gem-quality sapphires but also well-formed crystals with unusual mineral associations.

Madagascar is one of the world’s developing sources of mineral specimens, widely regarded by collectors as the world’s pegmatite capital. Its geology is dominated by ancient Precambrian rocks formed during the assembly of Gondwana and later reworked by high-grade metamorphism and tectonic activity during the Pan-African orogeny. These processes created ideal conditions for the formation of rare-element pegmatites, whose volatile-rich melts produced large, well-formed crystals in open cavities. As a result, Madagascar is renowned for exceptional tourmaline, beryl, quartz and a wide range of rare minerals. Mining in Madagascar has largely been small-scale and artisanal, often characterised by sudden rushes that draw thousands of miners to new discoveries before fading away. While industrial mining exists, most specimen material comes from hand-worked pegmatites and gem gravels. For collectors, Madagascar offers an unmatched combination of geological diversity, historic discoveries and continuing new finds, making it one of the most exciting and productive mineral localities in the world today.
